While recovery from a drug and alcohol addiction is possible, relapse is a constant danger – often with lethal consequences.

For many, it can be a never-ending cycle with around-the-clock cravings to use drugs or alcohol. These cravings can be so strong that an IBH Addiction Recovery client may have difficulty thinking about anything except getting the drug and using it, making it difficult to learn the skills needed to recover.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to treating substance use disorders. The prescribed medication operates to:

  • Normalize brain chemistry
  • Block the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids
  • Relieve physiological cravings
  • Normalize body functions without negative and euphoric effects of substance used

Medications are approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and our programs are clinically driven and tailored to meet each client’s needs. Two of the most commonly prescribed medications are:

Suboxone

Suboxone, a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, may provide clients enough relief from severe discomfort to allow them to benefit from treatment. However, Suboxone is a Schedule III controlled substance and can be abused for its mood-altering effect.

Vivitrol

Vivitrol, an injectable form of naltrexone, prevents people from experiencing a high if they use heroin or opioids. While Vivitrol has no mood-altering effect, it won’t prevent people from feeling high if they use methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, marijuana, or another drug.

IBH Addiction Recovery is committed to a MAT protocol that includes educating our clients on the medicine being prescribed. MAT is intended to be utilized in combination with Residential and Day Treatments or Outpatient Programs. MAT is intended as a time-limited treatment, not a permanent solution.
